Eyebrows, they’re funny things, aren’t they? Without them, you look a bit odd and some people choose to shave their eyebrows to draw on a new shape or style of eyebrow. In my personal experience, my eyebrows weren’t always a popular choice. In fact, growing up in the 90s and early 00s, thick eyebrows weren’t really the ‘in thing‘. Instead, it was thin eyebrows penciled on ones. For me though, I’m glad I didn’t succumb to the pressure of plucking them too thinly or getting them waxed during my teenage years.
Nowadays, my eyebrows are worshipped. To many people who’ve met me in person or through my social media, they’re in awe of my eyebrows. I didn’t get it until I saw someone with bigger eyebrows than me and I remember being like ‘Woah those are incredible‘. Nowadays, people are a lot less judgemental of others, yet there’s still a long way to go, don’t get it twisted. However, I’m sure that no teacher nowadays would dream of insulting a student. I definitely had that experience when I was a teenager in high school and I’ll never forget it.
Picture the scene – We’re doing self-portraits in art class. Sadly, I didn’t inherit my dad’s artistic talents and so the drawing itself was pretty questionable. However, my teacher, trying to be helpful took the drawing and started showing me where I could change a few things – sketchy AF, I know. And you know what you said?
‘Your eyebrows are much thicker, like slugs‘ – Rude Art Teacher
EXCUSE ME? It’s one of those moments that I wish I could go back to now and just thrust my eyebrows in her face and go HA, who’s laughing now?! For context, she had penciled on eyebrows, so I can only fathom that this came from a place of jealousy.
Eyebrows Come In All Shapes & Sizes
The reality of our body hair is that you can do anything you want with it. It’s yours after all so if you want to shave, shave it off. If you want to let it grow, grow it! Eyebrows come in all different shapes and sizes and your eyebrows are sisters, not twins. They don’t always look exactly the same. The important message that I want to share with you guys is that it’s important not to shame others for decisions on what they do to their body. I would have never dreamed of commenting on my art teacher’s eyebrows because it’s her eyebrows and she can do what she wants with them. Just like how teenage Natalie decided that she wanted to keep her eyebrows thick and bushy.
It’s Less Fussy With Thicker Eyebrows
For anyone that might be seeing this and who has thick eyebrows, you can probably relate with me that tending to your brows when they’re thicker is a lot easier. For me, the main struggle is having to keep them neat because, with dark hair, it shows a lot quicker than someone with lighter hair. I’m talking about stray hairs that are literally all over the surrounding areas of my eyebrows, it’s something that I’ve found waxing to be a lot more useful to do and less time-consuming. However, aside from that, I don’t really need to use eyebrow products, other than when I want to.
I’m generally someone who doesn’t really like to do a lot (basically I’m a lazy slob) so the thought of lining my eyebrows every day sounds like a nightmare. However, that’s just my own opinion, and thicker eyebrows are less fussy.
Thick Eyebrows Are Trendy
As much as you shouldn’t follow every trend that comes along, if you’re hating on your thick eyebrows, then just know that your eyebrows are trendy right now. The thinner eyebrows used to be in but now thick and luscious brows are here and they’re here to stay. I think we may have the likes of Cara Delevingne to thank for that as when she came onto the scene, one of the benefits she had was the thick eyebrows.
Trends come and go, so who knows if eyebrows will remain a hot topic ten years from now. However, if you have them, embrace their popularity and enjoy it. Thick eyebrows are beautiful and they should be appreciated for the beauty that they are.
Don’t Give Into Peer Pressure
A big life lesson that I’ve learned and that I’m glad to have learned is that I’ve rarely given into peer pressure. It’s something I didn’t do when I was in high school but that so many of them did where I went. Whether it was going to parties and underage drinking down the parks. I wasn’t interested in losing my virginity to someone random and I avoided those individuals who would have been a bad influence on me. It gives you a bit of satisfaction seeing those people whose high school years were their prime time and seeing them now not really getting the same life experiences as maybe I’ve been fortunate to have.
So don’t give in to peer pressure, whether it’s something as simple as changing your eyebrows to fit in, to misbehaving because your co-workers or co-students are. It’s important to live the life that you want and for me, my eyebrows are a significant part of who I am and what makes me, me!
