If you know me personally, then you’ll know that I’m a big fan of candles. I’ve mentioned on my most recent blog, goals for 2021, that I’d love to even release my own line of candles one day. When it comes to my home, I’m all about that cosy life. I want things that are going to bring warmth and comfort to me in my home. It’s important to surround yourself with things that you love and can appreciate because after all, you’re the one who has to live in your property, not your guests. Here are some of the benefits of candles around the home.
They Provide A Home Fragrance
When you step into someone’s home or hug them, they usually have a scent, right? It might be a particular laundry detergent they use on their clothes consistently or perhaps an air freshener that you always see them spraying around the home. If you like a particular scent when it comes to candles, then it might be a good idea to have a home fragrance. For me, I do love anything cinnamon or spicy and so even outside of the festive period, I love burning candles that have this typically festive scent. You might like to preference a fragrance for each room individually as I know that not every fragrance you have in the bedroom is going to be suitable for the bathroom.
It’s good to test and trial different scents to see which one you like the most. A home fragrance can be something that ends up being nostalgic and there might be a few scents that you can think of now that remind you of someone or a certain time in your life. Smell is a very important sense because it plays a big part in how you feel. I remember specifically a foody smell that I always associated with primary school and I remember smelling it somewhere as an adult and being completely transported back to that moment back in school!
A Candle’s Light Is An Immediate Mood Booster
Improving your mood is something you always want to try and do. When it comes to candles, that gradual smell that wafts into the air always provides me with those serotonins that are an instant mood booster. I love candles because they provide me with a lot of happiness and regardless of the scent it provides, that feeling is always there. That’s why it’s a good thing to light when you have a bath or watching a movie. I’ll often light a candle in the bedroom if I’m having a pamper evening or want to relax with a book in bed.
Considering they only offer a limited number of hours, depending on how big the candle is, it can provide a lot of positivity and happiness. Candles are a great way to improve your mood, especially if you’re having a bad day.
If you’re looking for some candle inspiration, I can recommend Jo Malone for those who want to be boujee and Rituals for a more affordable candle brand. I’ll let you know as and when I get around to launching my own candle line so you can get the benefits of candles for a cheaper price!
It Sets The Scene For A Relaxed Afternoon Or Evening
The ambiance of your home is important to get right and when it comes to your surroundings, it’s good to set the scene. Candles can be a good way of encouraging a certain state of relaxation and when I feel like I need that in my life, the first thing I’ll do is light a candle. It’s almost as if you’re creating that space specifically for yourself and it’s funny how a candle can provide that. I’m going to try and make 2021 a year where I relax a little more during the evenings and weekends. I want to be able to spend some time doing more reading and I also want to try and make a serious move on this book that I want to write.
Whether you simply use candlelight to light up your space or you put on a bedside lamp, the benefits of candles can provide a small but influential glow on the space you’re in.
The Right Ones Won’t Be Harmful In Your Home
Many people will avoid burning candles because some waxes can burn and be harmful to the air you breathe in and out as a household. It’s good to try and focus on those candles that provide a clean burn. Basically, you want those that aren’t going to create that black soot around the candle jar or perhaps stain the walls around picture frames. It’s worth doing your research to find the best ones out there. I believe beeswax is one of the better clean burners out there but there are now all sorts of wax types on the market that you’re likely to find multiple ones that are great for burning cleaner than the more traditional wax types.
The last thing you want is to cause harm to you or your loved ones, so it’s a good idea to look at the candles that are going to be better, even if you’re having to spend a little more money. At the same time though, the more expensive candles aren’t necessarily the cleanest ones. I was surprised to see that Jo Malone candles actually generate quite a bit of the black soot around the edge of the glass.
I really do love candles and just this Christmas, my partner bought me all of the candles, so he certainly knows me very well. If you’re not someone who usually buys candles, take a trip to TK Maxx or shop online on places like Etsy. There are so many independent businesses that sell candles and so it’s definitely worth a go.
The benefits of candles can really make a difference to your home so get yourself out there and try a few. Where do you shop for candles? Let me know in the comments below.
