Divorce is Always Messy
We can all think that divorces are like what we see on TV. In fact, it’s very rare for spouses to attend court with slanging matches. No-fault divorces have changed the process entirely, and this means spouses cannot object to proceedings being filed. In fact, the court may only intervene if the couples cannot settle financial disputes. The mediation process is purpose-built for this reason, where everything can be settled in a less intense environment.
You Can Get Divorced Quickly
While there is no denying the divorce process is a lot simpler, there is no such thing as a so-called “quickie divorce”. A no-fault divorce can take at least 30 weeks to finalise because of the numerous statutory time frames. The divorce process is the perfect opportunity for someone to not just get their affairs in order, but their life in order. It is not a quick process, but it is certainly quicker than it used to be, and this includes celebrities. Lots of people think that celebrities get quickie divorces, but divorce petitions are processed in the order they are received.
You Can Get Divorced as Soon as You’re Married
You need to be married for at least 12 months before you can get a divorce. Prior to the 12-month mark, you can apply for an annulment.
Divorce Proceedings Are Always Expensive
We can all think that a divorce is a costly process, especially if you and your ex cannot agree. There is the possibility that people can undertake divorce proceedings by themselves to avoid those legal fees, but legal providers can offer fixed fees which can ensure that both spouses can get their finances in order.
The Mother is More Likely to Get Custody of the Children
During the separation process, the parents will have to decide who the children will live with and how much time is spent. If the parents cannot agree, this is when the court steps in. Many mothers believe that they have the right to full custody, but it may not be viewed that way. This can be a big shock to mothers, therefore, you must prepare yourself for the worst-case scenario and take steps to ensure you look after your mental health.
