I wanted to go around my home, showcasing some of the rooms that I’m incredibly grateful to have, and while there are some changes that I would like to make to every room, I thought I’d share some of the loves that I have for my home, regardless of how incomplete it feels to me right now.
The home that we bought used to have a single garage, and I believe the previous owners who came before the ones we bought from converted the garage into an extra room and utility. Not just that, but built upwards to create two additional bedrooms.
So let’s take a look at one of our favourite rooms in the home – the snug.
The snug used to be the garage, and it really has become the place where we relax in the evenings when we want to watch television or, for my husband, to play on his Xbox. While we have a sitting room in which I intend to spend a lot of time reading due to the beautiful log-burning fire, the snug is more of an entertainment space.
As a room, you’ve got sliding doors, which is certainly unusual, but when we were moving in, it certainly made a lot of sense, as the hallway with the staircase is quite narrow in comparison. I really wanted to get this covered quickly, so we installed a ceiling-to-floor blind that is both thermal and blackout.
It makes a real difference when it comes to watching a movie or needing privacy. The blind itself is also always set halfway during the day, as bringing them fully open makes the room feel more exposed.
One of the selling points of the home for both of us was the media wall, which fits a big television perfectly, and the fireplace below, which pumps out heat, is perfect for those cooler nights when we need an extra source of heating and light. The only downside to the media wall is the harsh spotlights, which I think I’m going to get a warmer light for. At the same time, I’m also going to get a couple of lamps that are rechargeable and therefore give us the opportunity for lighting.
The previous owners had a fairly small sofa and chair in the space, which looked nice but made the space quite limited and bare. We got a big corner sofa that’s incredibly plush and comfy, and although it takes up most of the space, it does so without feeling cramped.
Since Christmas, we’ve had the addition of a play table for Sonny, which is perfectly placed in the corner for now. We used to have a glass bar shelf, but I think we’re going to need to take this apart and keep it under our bed until the kids have grown up. I don’t want to get rid of it because it’s so nice and we’ll use it again one day!
So that’s the snug! I think the few changes I want to make are possibly painting the media wall a darker colour to add some interest to what is otherwise a plain and cool space. I always want to add a rug to the space, as well as a few more throws and a new throw basket. For the shelves, I’d like to add some more colorful decor and frames to just add some pops of colour to the space in general.
