I often have to pinch myself when I walk around our home. I feel incredibly privileged and grateful that we live in a home that’s comfortable, spacious, and beautiful. One of the main features of our home that both my husband and I fell in love with when it came to buying the property was the kitchen. Bearing in mind we were coming from a 2-bed flat where the living room, dining room, and kitchen were all open plan. The kitchen was in the corner, and so the surface space was limited to perhaps one or two spots for preparation.
Now, in this kitchen, we have a dedicated sink area, so much storage we don’t have enough to fill it with belongings, and surface space for days. I will preface this by saying, eventually, I think we’ll need a complete kitchen refurb, only because this kitchen, in regard to the cabinets, is definitely around twenty years old. I say this because the last time it was sold before our previous owners sold it to us, the last sale was in 2008, and those same cabinets, albeit not painted, were there.
Let me show some of the things that I love about our kitchen.
The storage space – although a little excessive
We had a total of six or seven cupboards, I think, in our two-bed flat. In this one, I actually haven’t counted, which tells you that there’s a lot.
With so much storage space, we loved the fact that we could use this kitchen space for years to come because it’s got the capacity for our growing family.
Yes, the cabinets are old, but they’re still perfectly functional. I think if, and when we do get a kitchen refurb, I’d be tempted to adjust the configuration of some of the cabinets, pushing them back slightly in size so that they’re not so deep and taking up the counter space.
However, the sheer amount of storage space is a great advantage to have with a growing family like ours.
The view we get with the open-plan dining area
This view was perhaps one of the main selling points when it came to buying the home. The view from our kitchen is beautiful, and it’s just a lovely expanse of space to look out on when having your breakfast. It’s made even more enjoyable with the window seats that we have available too.
The end goal for this storage space here is to have the openings on hinges and to get a beautiful custom-made window seat that’s cosy enough that I can get a cosy throw on there with a good book and a glass of wine. The view also wraps around what was once the conservatory, and also a window to look out onto the garden and view while you’re doing the dishes at the sink. Perfection!
A big sink space
The sink space in our kitchen is divine and again, something that has been there since 2008 at least. I think with a kitchen refurb, I’d get another one of these sinks as it’s definitely worn at the bottom from bumps and scuffs.
The sink space is huge, and it’s just a really great area. Again, I think the wooden worktops around this space might be better with something more durable and water-resistant. I think a bigger drainage area is needed, too.

I do love the wooden worktops. They add a rustic charm to the space, but they’re in need of probably restaining and then resealing to maintain them. This is probably something I’d do halfway between getting the kitchen refurbishment. I think the refurb would ultimately end up with us needing new countertops, especially if I wanted to reconfigure cabinet sizes.
