I would like to consider myself to be a food connoisseur – which is a fancy description for a lover of food. I could never really diet because for me, food should be enjoyed, and while it might not be in moderation for me currently, I’d rather have a good relationship with food where my body is being fueled properly, especially as a mum of an energetic toddler.
For me, to enjoy cooking in your own kitchen, it’s good to have a vast cuisine knowledge so that you’re not stuck having the same meals each week.
With that being said, if you’re looking to expand your cuisine knowledge so that you can get more enjoyment from cooking, here’s how.

Do your research
First and foremost, you’ll want to do the research to understand what cuisines are out there and what you might not have tried yet.
Thankfully, there are a lot of resources out there to take advantage of. For example, Square Meal offers a vast array of restaurants available locally to you and even on a wider geographic scale.
It’s always good to find new ways of cooking and a lot of that comes with research on popular celebrity chefs, knowing what dishes come from various cuisines and actively looking for dishes you can try out in your own kitchen.
Attend some cooking classes
Another way to get your fix of cooking different dishes is by attending some cooking classes. There are likely to be any number of opportunities whereby you can go out and test out new dishes with your own hands. In a learning environment with a professional at the helm, you can learn some of the core skills and knowledge needed to master a new cuisine dish.
One of the beautiful things that comes from being a more diverse society within your own local area is that you get to try out new cuisines that many family generations before could only dream of discovering on their doorstep.
Dine out at different restaurants
When you’re having a romantic dinner out with your loved one or meeting up with friends over dinner, it’s a good idea to try something new and dine at a different restaurant that you’ve not tried before.
Try to push the boat out where you can, whether that’s testing out a new Caribbean restaurant or showing up at a well-loved Indian restaurant. There are lots of different options to try both near and far so it’s good to make an active effort where you can instead of making the same trips to places you’ve dined at before.
Support local businesses of different cuisines
In order for new and unique cuisines to exist, it’s important to support local businesses. So when it comes to trying out a new restaurant or local fast food joint, try to support local businesses of different cuisines instead of the more well-established chain businesses.
Those chain businesses will still exist with the general public but it’s the local businesses that rely on your support more so. Try to support the local businesses where possible and find new ones that have recently opened up so that you give them every opportunity to continue existing in the future.
Get out the recipe book in the kitchen
Getting out a recipe book is a great way to inspire yourself in the kitchen. Think about what recipes you’ve tried in the past and push yourself where you can to try something new and exciting. Experiment with different herbs and spices that you might not have tried before, as well as different prepping and cooking techniques that might enable you to perfect a new style of cooking.
Try something new each week
Finally, be sure to try something new each week. This will motivate you to switch up your dining experiences at home and that may also encourage you to go out and try something new within your local area.
Have you tried any new cuisines recently? Let me know in the comments what your favourite cuisine is.
